The wait is over for reality television fans as I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here premiered on Channel Ten last night.
The star-studded lineup of contestants includesMaureen McCormick, Leisel Jones, Merv Hughes, Laura Dundovic, Chrissie Swan, Joel Creasey, Tyson Mayr, Barry Hall, Lauren Brant and Andrew Daddo.
And while the show has kicked off with a bang attracted plenty of praise on social media, some big names in the local media industry have called out the show’s cast for not being diverse enough.
Radio presenter Yumi Stynes took to Twitter on Sunday night writing: ‘Watching ‘I’m A White Celebrity Get Me Outta Here’ w kids. Loving @joelcreasey and of course @ChrissieSwan but there are other races in Oz!’
Meanwhile fellow media personality Marc Fennell tweeted: ‘And people tell me there’s no diversity problem on Australian tv. #ImACelebrityAU’.
At ‘I Am Starstruck’, one of our editor Alicia “Leeshie” V‘s passions is advocating a greater sense of cultural diversity in the Australian media landscape.
We certainly have a long way to go, with many local television dramas still featuring a predominantly anglo-saxon cast.
Never the less, we’ve still been able to come up with some familiar faces from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds who would be great for a show like I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here.
Whether they have the time or would agree to go on a show like this if a network approached them is another issue altogether, but check out the list below and join the conversation on our Facebook page or tweet @LeeshieV.
