It’s just hit cinemas, and The Big Sick is already creating lots of buzz.
Based on actor Kumail Nanjiani’s real-life love story, the film explores something that many who’ve been brought up in an ethnic household in a western country have had to deal with – the conversation with their parents around interracial marriage.
Have you heard of the phrase “no BMW‘s”? This is thrown around a lot by the older generation, particularly amongst the South Asian cultures, and basically it means you cannot date someone who is Black, Muslim or White.
The Big Sick follows Pakistani-Muslim comedian Kumail’s journey, as he falls head over heels for a white American girl Emily, much against his parent’s desires.
They already have a lineup of nice brown girls who they believe would be more suited for their son, but as the film’s dialogue hilariously suggests, “What is this? Pakistan’s Next Top Model?”
Kumail stars in the flick as his awesome self, while Zoe Kazan plays his love-interest, based on his real-life partner Emily V. Gordon, who guess what, was one of the film’s writers. Cute!
Now the headline of this article implies the film is a must-see for anyone who’s been told to not date a ‘BMW’, but to be honest, it’s about love with no boundaries, and surely all of us can take something from that.
The Big Sick is in cinemas now so what are you waiting for?
